Magnificent and beautiful, Basilique Notre Dame Dela Paix (the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace) is our Building Obsession for this week. Located in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), it is also the birthplace of the first Ivorian president Felix Houphouet Boigny under whose administration it was built. The Basilica was given as a gift to the Catholic Church by Felix Houphouet Boigny and is currently managed by an autonomous foundation called “International Foundation Our Lady of Peace” (FINDP) created by Pope John Paul II, who in September 1990, consecrated the building.
According to various international sources including The Telegraph UK, who quoted the Guinness World Record, the Basilica is currently the largest church in the world at 30,000 sqm and has a capacity of 18,000. The basilica is constructed with marble imported from Italy and is furnished with 7,000 square meters of contemporary stained glass from France.
It was designed by renowned architect Mr. Pierre Fakhoury and its artistic director Mr. Patrick d’Hautuille, construction was undertaken by Dumez, a French construction company. It took just four years (1985- 1989) for the project to be completed.
