Hilton Worldwide announced at the 2016 Africa Hotel Investment Forum (AHIF) in Kigali, Rwanda, that the company had signed 3 new hotels in a bid to expand their coverage over the African continent and grow their footprint to 80+ hotels worldwide over the next 3 – 5 years.

Among the new hotels is the continent’s first modular built hotel, which will be a 280-room Hilton Garden Inn in Accra, Ghana. It is being developed under a management agreement with Independence Properties Ltd. The modular construction process involves assembling portions of the hotel, such as guest rooms and hallways, in China before moving them to the final site.

Hilton Worldwide also signed a management agreement with Jabavu Village Ltd to build Africa’s tallest hotel in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The 43-floor hotel will offer 255-rooms and is set to open in 2020. The ambitious project comes at a good time, mainly because the Kenyan economy has made great strides towards achieving economic diversification. Growth in the East African nation’s agricultural, construction, telecommunications and tourism sectors also mean that the country has seen an increase in its business and leisure travellers. In Q2:2016, tourist arrivals in Kenya grew 10% to 186,685 travellers and GDP grew by 6.2% over the same period.

Finally, Hilton announced that 76 additional guest rooms would be added to the Curio – The Legend, Lagos Airport hotel that was announced earlier this year. Brining this hotel’s total room count to 130. The hotel is said to be opening in 2017.
