Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Amobode, performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the J.K Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan, Lagos on Wednesday. The project is part of a wider initiative to transform the Onikan-Marina axis into a world class tourism hub.
Speaking at the ceremony, he explained that the centre, originally built in 1928, had provided a means for recreation and entertainment. Due to great neglect however, the centre became redundant and fell into a state of disrepair, serving uses other than those for which it was built. The new centre will consist of an Exhibition Centre, a Library, a Multi-Purpose Hall, Learning Spaces, Restaurant and Lounges, a pavilion for stage performances while retaining its swimming pool and sports facilities as well as.
Other projects including the development of the Eko Park, which will consist of the Lagos Heritage Centre for Leadership at the former Presidential Lodge Marina, the Lagos History Center at the former State House Marina, Lagos Museum and a new 55-feet Eyo Statue will serve as catalysts for the regeneration for the rest of Lagos Island.
The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund is planning to collaborate with Construction Kaiser to use the construction site as a training ground for over 200 Artisans and construction Entrepreneurs’ under the Lagos State Employability Support Project.
