Lagos State Governor, Hon Babajide Sanwo-Olu, launched Thursday, 25th of May, 2023 launched three housing estates within Lagos State. These estates were built as part of budgetary allocations with the aim to meet the housing demand within the modern metropolis. These housing estates are located in Gbagada, Odo-Onosa Ayandelu, and Agbowa.

Details on the LagosHoms Housing Estates

Described as one of the choice housing schemes by the present administration, this estate comprises 72 home units broken into:

  • 48 two-bedroom and
  • 24 three-bedroom apartments

This estate is located along Agbowa-Sagamu Road, Agbowa in Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area, covering 8.22 hectares of land. It comprises 660 units in 70 Blocks of four housing types, broken into:

  • 8 Blocks of One-Bedroom Flats (192 Units);
  • 21 Blocks of Two-Bedroom Flats (252 Units);
  • 26 Blocks of Three-Bedroom Flats (156 Units) and
  • 15 Blocks of Three-Bedroom Flats (60 Units).

This estate was built to house displaced people in the Odo-Onosa-Ayandelu axis of Lagos state, the same axis of the Odo Onosa/Ode-Ayandelu housing estate. It comprises 144 units broken into:

  • 4 Blocks of Two-Bedroom (48 Units) and
  • 4 Blocks of One-Bedroom (96 Units)

All 3 estates are said to have access to amenities and infrastructural facilities such as Roads and Drainage network, car parks, external electrification, water reticulation and sewage treatment plant among others.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Housing who was also present at the launch, Mr. Kamar Olowoshago, revealed that these housing units were built using budget allocations with more estates in the pipeline. He said “In the last four years, we have delivered 19 housing schemes in various parts of the State. Besides these three to be commissioned, we also have ongoing projects at Sangotedo, Egan, Epe and Ajara that will be ready in due course.”

Operational Efficiency Should Be Maximized to Bridge Supply and Demand Gap

Housing estates are an effective means of meeting the high housing demand of Lagos residents. It’s encouraging to see both Federal and state governments working towards bridging the housing deficit as the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria recently commissioned housing estates under the National Housing Fund scheme. However, we’re reluctant to offer much praise to the federal government who has severely underperformed by delivering just 2,860 units in 8 years. The introduction of new schemes won’t solve the housing crisis if operational efficiency is overlooked. This is one aspect the incoming government can improve upon in the next four years.
