The Kenyan Government and World Health Organization recently partnered to build a regional emergency hub in Nairobi. In the meeting that hosted the Cabinet Secretary for Health, Dr. Nakhumicha S. Wafula, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative, Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a WHO Regional Emergency Hub for Eastern and Southern Africa in Nairobi.

The hub will serve as an emergency center for Southern and Eastern Africa that will enhance timely support for emergency cases in the areas. According to the Kenyan Government, ‘the agreement is coming at a critical time when the African Region is facing an increasing number of health emergencies ranging from disease outbreaks to natural disasters, which threaten to reverse years of health and development progress in the region.’

In order to build the emergency hub, the Kenyan Government donated 30 Acres of Land with an additional $5 million for construction purposes at the Kenyatta University Land.  Notably, the hub will contain a center of excellence specialized in capacity building in health and crisis emergency management.

During the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary for Health Dr. Nakhumicha S. Wafula mentioned, “Through this partnership with WHO, Kenya will have access to the organization’s global network of experts, knowledge, and resources, and will be able to leverage the latest innovations and technologies to improve response times and the ability to provide essential healthcare services during emergencies,”

The establishment and location of the hub are sure to enhance the healthcare sector in not just Kenya, but also East Africa, as well as increase investors’ interest in the healthcare sector.
