Earlier this week, Marriott International officially opened the doors of its first Marriott Hotel in Rwanda. The 254-room Marriott is located in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city and 20 minutes away from the Kigali International Airport. According to the hotel group, it is creating approximately 500 jobs and will be among the country’s biggest and most luxurious properties, further enhancing Kigali’s reputation as a hub for conferences and conventions. Amenities at the new hotel include 18 meeting rooms, 7 restaurants and bars, full service spa and a total event space of 2,859m (30,744sq. ft).
The World Travel & Tourism Council says Rwanda’s travel and tourism industry generated 7.1 percent of the country’s GDP in 2015 and predicts it to rise at 4.1 percent annually through 2025. Rwanda is increasingly seen as a forward-looking African country and is becoming a popular destination for business and tourism. Rwanda is ranked 62nd of 189 countries in the 2016 Ease of Doing Business Index and this ranking is the 2nd highest in Sub-Saharan Africa after Mauritius. The country also ranks 1st and 3rd for Registering a property and Dealing with construction permits respectively in Sub-Saharan Africa.
At the Kigali Marriott’s opening ceremony, Marriott International President and CEO Arne Sorenson explained that Rwanda is going through an economic transformation and they are proud to be a part of it through this project.
