On Sunday, the Lagos State Government demolished a number of structures on the setback on Alfred Rewane (Kingsway) Road in Ikoyi. As shown in the map below, affected structures include showrooms/shops for Mercedes-Benz, Kia and Hyundai/Hyger cars. The Special Committee on Clean-Up of Ikoyi, Lekki, and Victoria Island, which was inaugurated by Governor Ambode has commenced enforcement of the Environmental Sanitation and Town Planning Laws in the affected areas.

When this happened to stores such as Nuli Juice on Rumens Road in early September, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Tunji Bello explained that “…neat road sides of the past now parade pockets of kiosks, illegal parking lots, unapproved mechanic workshops, roadside beer parlours and commercial centres.” Adding that originally residential areas now have industrial and commercial structures, that were distorting the balance of the environment.

According to the State Government, notices were given.
