Background
- Nigerian Youths took to the streets on the 8th of October, 2020 to express their frustration with the ‘Special Anti-robbery Response Squad (SARS)’ unit of the Nigerian Police Force under #endSARS.
- After several days of nationwide #endSARS peaceful protest, the Federal Government through a statement released by the Inspector General of Police – Mohammed Adamu on Sunday 11th October 2020 dissolved the SARS unit with 5 promises to support it.
- The Youth collectively responded with 5 clear demands which were not attended to by the government. As a result, the peaceful protest continued.
- The protest escalated on the 19th of October, with the Government deploying Military troops on the streets of Abuja. On the 20th of October 2020, protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos were attacked by Nigerian Army troops leaving a number of casualties. Hours before the attack, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu at 12 pm had declared a 24 hours curfew starting from 4 pm the same day.
