It is no longer news that Nigeria has not been able to develop
a sustainable housing system that takes care of the housing
needs of her citizens. With a population of over 170 million people, Nigeria, the most populous country in black Africa is
plagued with housing problems. According to the World Bank,
Nigeria has a housing deficit of about 17 million
units. Reasons for the glaring deficit in affordable houses in
Nigeria can be attributed to some of the following factors:
lack of expertise, uncertainties in housing policies, inadequate funding, poor motivation for relevant institutional agencies, political and selfish gains of some key stakeholders,
amongst others.
This publication, therefore, examines the challenges and solutions to affordable housing in Nigeria.
