Summary

The formal grocer retail market in Senegal is home to a refreshing display of budding competition, largely driven by European retail brands operating via local partners. While the population of Senegal and Dakar is relatively small at 15m+ and 1m+ respectively, these retailers have been able to find catchment areas in Dakar and other regions across the country. At the centre of the competition lay Auchan, who made entry approximately 4 years ago and now have up to 20 stores in their portfolio. They have put pressure on incumbents including Citydia and also Mercure International, that operate the Casino retail brand. Though Citydia managed to strike a partnership to open units in multiple Total Filling Stations to bolster their presence, they have since retracted and are now looking to consolidate. This was seen through the sale of all their stores to Auchan in late 2017. The market is set to become even more competitive with Carrefour's impending entry. Keep reading for a brief factsheet on the retailers operating in the region.
