We calculate that over 12,000 rooms in 74 hotels have been deleted – deals that were there in 2018, but are no longer there in the 2019 data, and which have not opened in the interim. 65 per cent of these are in sub-Saharan Africa, and the remainder in North Africa. Simplistically, and not taking into account openings during the period, there has been a net increase of almost 11,000 rooms in the pipeline, 17 per cent up on 2018. Whilst the 2019 total is slightly down, there has been growth of 51 per cent in the total pipeline rooms since 2015, and in those five years the North Africa pipeline has grown by 58 per cent and the pipeline in sub-Saharan Africa by 47 per cent.
