In February 2017, Rotana, a UAE-based hotel company, finally made its debut in Sub Saharan Africa.  The Kin Plaza Arjaan by Rotana is located in Gombe, an upscale business and residential district of Kinshasa – where most of the city’s hotel supply, including the five-star Kempinski Fleuve Congo and Pullman Grand – is located.

The Kin Plaza is an 11-storey, five-star hotel with 101 luxurious rooms, studios and suites with fully equipped kitchenettes, double-glazed windows, and balconies, three food and beverage outlets, 650 square meters of meeting and conference rooms consisting of a grand ballroom and four meeting rooms, and a 300 square meter state-of-the-art fitness facility.  The hotel is also directly connected to the Kin Plaza Shopping Mall.

Kinshasa is the third largest city in Africa, after Cairo and Lagos.  With 2014 estimated population figures at over 11 million people, it is the world’s largest francophone urban area.  DRC has achieved average GDP growth of over 7% since 2010, largely driven by its extractive industries for mineral resources and public investment.  The country’s tourism industry is mainly sustained by business travel into Kinshasa and other regions, and Kinshasa receives the bulk of the business tourism.

Rotana has other hotels in various stages of development in other cities such as Luanda, Lagos, and Dar es Salaam.  According to the 2016 Hotel Pipeline Report by W Hospitality Group, Rotana had approximately 2,400 rooms in the pipeline for Africa.  Before opening in Kinshasa, the company had two existing hotels with a total 759 rooms in Sharm El Sheik and Khartoum.  In addition to the Kin Plaza, the company plans to add nine more hotels in eight African countries with its Rotana, Arjaan and Centro brands, over the next few years.
