Douala Grand Mall is the first phase of the Douala Grand Mall and Business Park. The Grade-A mixed-use development was designed by British Architects Benoy who notably designed the Westfield London and the Shanghai International Finance Center, in collaboration with South African company Raubex Renovo who are the main contractors on the project. Construction on the project commenced in Q1:2018 and was completed by Q2:2020.
With 18,000 m² of lettable retail and leisure space on two levels with 640 ground and basement parking bays, Douala Grand Mall is presently the largest mall in Central Africa. It has received a preliminary EDGE certification from IFC for its energy-saving strategies and is also the country’s first certified Green Building. It has also received an award for Excellence in Design and Landscape from the Network of Landscape Engineers in Cameroon. The Business Park, which is the second phase of the project will contain 5 office buildings and a gross floor area of 40,000 m².
The Douala Grand Mall is located close to Bonapriso, the wealthiest region in Cameroon’s largest city. It is also located within 2 minutes from the International Airport. The initial budget of the project was €40 million. The mall with 160 retail shops and 22 f&b shops ranging from 33 m² to 600 m² has a catchment of 4 million inhabitants and 300,000 expected visitors per month according to the developers. Other completed retail developments by Actis in Africa include Ikeja City Mall in Nigeria, Jabi Lake Mall Abuja also in Nigeria and the Accra Mall in Ghana.
