Raymond House, a 7-floor office property located at the intersection of Broad Street and Martins Street in Lagos Island is currently being renovated by Afriland Properties. The project team is made up of high-profile contractors. On Tuesday, 16th of September, 2025, it was reported that there was a fire incident at the building. The next day, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and United Bank for Africa (UBA), confirmed in a staff communication that employees from his organisation were among the casualties of the tragic fire outbreak.
The fire, which originated in the building's basement inverter room, quickly spread smoke throughout multiple floors of the structure that also houses a UBA branch. Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to the emergency call at 1:38 PM, deploying firefighting teams from two stations. While nine victims were rescued, with five successfully resuscitated, the incident resulted in multiple fatalities, including Heirs Holdings staff members.
