VoltagreenCT Development Company, a US-Based Ghanaian corporation, recently announced its plans for a new city development in the Volta region of Ghana. This project named “VOLTAGREENCT Project” is estimated to cost over $10 billion. It will be executed in phases over the next 10 years. The first phase of the project will be undertaken in collaboration with local and foreign partners. It is set to launch on the 16th of September, 2023 in Mafi-Anfoe.

Set to span approximately 30,000sqm, the aim of the project is to address the housing deficit within the region. In addition, it aims to transform the area into an internationally competitive tourism destination through an eco-friendly smart city. This city will be powered by green energy through solar systems in the Volta Region. In addition to affordable homes, the mixed-use city is expected to comprise:

  • Hospitals
  • Recreational facilities
  • Banks
  • Schools
  • Shopping centres

The VOLTAGREENCT Project joins Rendeavour’s Appolonia City as one of the proposed new city developments in Ghana.

New City Developments in Africa Gaining Momentum Amidst Demand for Urban Centres

The concept of new city developments has gained momentum within the African continent over the past decade. So far, data shows that over 2 billion m2 of land area has been reserved for new African cities, with an estimated investment sum of $500 billion required to complete these cities. Once delivered, these cities are expected to solve problems of poor town planning and overcrowded urban centres, thereby improving the quality of life of their residents according to Estate Intel’s 2023 Factsheet on Africa’s New Cities.
