The Lagos State government has seen a large share of major infrastructural project completions between late 2022 and early 2023. Upon this backdrop, the President of Nigeria, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari was scheduled to visit Lagos State on January 23rd – 24th, 2023, in order to inaugurate four of these projects.

In an article we published last year, we highlighted the largest developments in and around the Lekki Free Zone area. We also mentioned that the Dangote Group’s Refinery and Petrochemical Park and the Lekki Deep Sea Port were scheduled for completion in 2022.

We are excited to see that both projects have been completed, while the Lekki Deep Sea Port was one of the inaugurated projects on the 23rd of January, 2023.

In addition to the Lekki Deep Sea Port, other projects being commissioned include:

  • Lekki Deep Sea Port

Location: Ibeju-Lekki

Expected Completion date: Q4: 2022

Sponsors: China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, Tolaram Group, Lagos State Government, Nigeria Ports Authority

Capacity: 2.7 million TEUs (Twenty foot equivalent unit) per annum

  • Eleko-Epe Expressway

Location: Ibeju-Lekki

Completion Date: Q4:2022

Length: 18 km

Sponsor: Lagos State Government

  • Imota Rice Mill

Location: Imota

Completion Date: Q4:2022

Capacity: 32 tonnes per hour

Sponsor: Lagos State Government

  • Blue Line Railway

Location: Marina to Mile 2

Completion Date: Q4:2022

Length: 13 km

Sponsor: Lagos State Government through Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA)

  • Renovated JK Randle Center

Location: Lagos Island

Completion Date: Q4:2022

Size: 11,000 sqm

Sponsor: Lagos State Government

It is noteworthy to mention that along with the commissioning of the first phase of the Blue line railway, the President will also perform the groundbreaking of the second phase.

As per our previous article, the completion of these projects, especially the Lekki deep sea port, is expected to have a positive impact on the country by increasing exports of factories in the Lekki Free Zone area, and reducing imports.

According to the Nigerian Ports Authority, the sea port will improve traffic flow in the Apapa corridor, lower freight costs & ultimately lower trading costs. This is done by redirecting customers from Appa Port towards the Lekki Deep Sea Port and thereby sharing the population.

The Railway on the other hand is expected to reduce traffic by decongesting the road of masses.

We are excited to see how all these developments will be put to use in the State and its benefits to the state’s residents.
