Africa Data Centres (ADC) has announced its plans to build its first data center in Kigali, Rwanda. This will be the second addition to its portfolio of data centers in East Africa, after the NBO1 Data Center in Nairobi. The new addition is set to be integrated into the already existing ecosystem in East Africa, by connecting it to the Nairobi site.
According to ADC’s announcement, the data center will have 2 MW of IT load, with breaking ground to occur in Q1:2023. Tesh Durvasula, CEO of ADC said during the announcement,
“It is an exciting time for Africa Data Centres. Our decision to build a data center in Kigali was an easy one, given Rwanda’s robust economic recovery post the COVID-19 pandemic and the Government of Rwanda’s focus on digital transformation.”
This news comes after ADC’s announcement on its expansion plans in Africa. The plan includes the building of 10 interconnected, carrier and cloud neutral data centers in 10 African Countries, at a cost of more than $US 500m. Countries in this expansion plan included Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco.
Africa Data Centers is a large network of interconnected carrier and cloud neutral data centers across Africa. The company is a part of Cassava Technologies, a communications solutions provider. In addition to the newly announced Rwandan data center, other data center facilities that have been built by ADC are:
- LOS1 Data Center in Lagos
- NBO1 Data Center in Nairobi
- CPT1 Data Center in CapeTown
- JHB 1 Midrand Data Center in Johannesburg and
- JHB 2 Samrand Data Center in Johannesburg.
