Hilton is set to welcome its first guests in Niger in 2019 after signing a management agreement with Niamey Hotel & Suites Niger Ltd for a 142 guest room property in its capital city of Niamey. Located at Rue des Oasis, Deizeibon, this project will become the first hotel to open in Niger under an international brand and will operate under Hilton’s flagship upper upscale Hilton Hotels & Resorts brand. It will be built as a nine-story tower block and include four dining outlets along with modern business and fitness facilities.

The West African country will join 103 in which Hilton operates globally with the company having recently added a presence in neighbouring Chad through 2016’s opening of Hilton N’Djamena, where room rates start at c. $200 per night.

West African countries including Mali, Cote d’Ivoire and Niger have been subject to terrorist activity over the past few years. While spill over activity from Boko Haram in Nigeria has been a source for some, separate attacks on hotels and resorts within the region have also seen risen. In a bid to “eradicate terrorists, thugs and murderers” in the vast Sahel, the region just south of the Sahara, France’s recently elected President Emmanuel Macron is looking to deploy a new 5,000-strong force in September to combat the wave of Islamist bombings, shootings and kidnappings.

Despite the negative activity, large international hotel groups including Hilton, Carlson Rezidor and Marriott are still forging ahead with aggressive growth plans across Africa to tap into underserved markets and position ahead the ‘Africa rising’ growth narrative being sold to most of the Western world.

Speaking on the opening, Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president, development, EMEA Hilton said:

“2019 will mark our fiftieth year of operating in Sub-Saharan Africa.  We have long been champions of the continent’s potential and we continue to lead the way in developing within new markets as we are doing in Niger.  It will be fitting to welcome our first guests here during what is set to be a landmark year for the company as a whole.”

Construction is currently ongoing at the centrally located site in Niamey, which will allow guests fairly easy access to the administrative hub of the city with many embassies and government buildings located on or around this main road.
