Article Summary: The Lagos State Governor, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has recently announced the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with two Chinese contractors for the execution of key infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s commercial capital. The Lagos State Governor, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has recently announced the signing of Memorandums of Understanding with two Chinese contractors for the execution of key infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s commercial capital. Among the projects are key transport networks in the form of the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge and the Lagos Green Line.

About the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge

The state government signed an MOU with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to undertake the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge in the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos State. This project contributes to the government’s bid to aid movement within the Lekki axis and decongest the Lekki-Epe expressway.

CCECC, the international engineering arm of the Chinese government, has a previous track record of undertaking government-sponsored projects in Nigeria with a portfolio that comprises the Lagos-Ibadan Railway and the Abuja Light Rail. In addition to building the bridge, discussions are also underway to award the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contract to CCECC.

About the Lagos Green Line Metro

The state governor also announced an MOU with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to undertake the Lagos Green Line Metro at the China-Africa Cooperation Summit in Beijing, China. This project is part of the larger Strategic Transport Masterplan introduced to aid interstate transportation and follows the completion of the Blue Line Metro and the progression of the Red Line Metro in Lagos State. In a previously published note, we highlighted why these projects are significant to residents and investors alike.

The Lagos Green Line Metro is a 68km railway line that will run from the Lekki Free Zone to Marina, while passing through Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ajah. Following the launch of the railway line, it is expected to transport 500,000 passengers daily, according to the governor. CHEC is a Chinese infrastructure contractor responsible for the delivery of the Lekki Deep Seaport in Lagos State.

These projects will address Lekki-Epe Axis’s biggest problem of connectivity

These transport projects will tackle Lekki-Epe Axis’s biggest problem of connectivity as the Lekki-Epe expressway is one of two major roads between that area and the rest of Lagos State, and the only direct link from the state’s central areas. As such, these projects will ease the pressure on that road while improving access to other areas in Lagos State. Overall, the Lekki axis of Lagos State seems to be the major benefactor in terms of infrastructure investments within the city. With major projects like the Lekki Deep Seaport and the Dangote Refinery already completed, and other conceptual projects like the Lekki Aiport planned for the near future, the area is bound to see further growth in terms of real estate investments.
