The long awaited Ajah Bridge was commissioned and opened for use by Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday.
Speaking at the event, Ambode explained:
“We had to give this project priority because of its strategic importance to the economic growth of the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Ibeju-Lekki-Epe axis. This axis will play a key role in the future prosperity of Lagos State as the home to many multi-billion Naira private investments in the Lekki Free Trade Zone as well as the upcoming seaport and airport.
In December 2015, the Lagos State Government approved the construction of flyover bridges at the Ajah roundabout and at the Abule-Egba junction, giving the construction a 16 month timeline. Both bridges were built by Hi-Tech and completed in a relatively timely manner. They were christened ‘Jubilee Bridges’ to commemorate the Lagos at 50 celebration.
Other initiatives to commence shortly as outlined by Ambode include the:
- ‘Activation’ of the Badore jetty,
- Creation of a bus route from Badore to Langbasa and Ajah axis,
- Rehabilitation of the Badore Road,
- Conversion of the alternative slip road which motorists used while the construction of the bridge lasted to accommodate a new Bus Terminal,
- Construction of an 8km regional road to serve as an alternative route to connect Victoria Garden City (VGC) from Freedom Road via a partnership with the private sector.
The bridge was designed with traffic signalization, street lighting, walkways, service ducts and drainage infrastructure. See photos below.
