Article Summary: Filmhouse Cinemas has opened an IMAX cinema, its first outside Africa, at a retail complex in Lekki, Lagos. The partnership with IMAX Corporation brings the world's most immersive cinematic experience to Nigeria, with plans for further expansion across the country.
Early last month, Filmhouse opened a retail complex in Lekki with an IMAX cinema, lounge and rooftop restaurant. It is located on The Rock Drive, Off Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive in Lekki Phase 1 on a c. 3,700m2 parcel of land. In a nutshell, IMAX, which stands for ‘Image Maximum’ has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. Other 3D and 2D movies can also be seen at this cinema.
The agreement between IMAX Corporation and Filmhouse Cinemas was announced in June 2015 and only 4 other African countries (Morocco, Egypt, Angola and South Africa) currently have IMAX cinemas.
Speaking on the agreement last year, IMAX EMEA President Andrew Cripps explained:
“We are delighted to join forces with Filmhouse Cinemas and enter Nigeria, which represents a key strategic move for our expansion in Africa. Recent reports project that Nigeria’s entertainment and media revenues will reach an estimated $8.5 billion by 2018 – more than doubling from 2013. As the biggest economy on the continent and a market that is extremely under-screened, we believe that together with Filmhouse we can seize the mutual growth opportunities that exist in Nigeria and bring the world’s most immersive cinematic experience to more audiences across the country.”
According to their website, Filmhouse cinemas has 10 screens in Nigeria with 3 in Lagos, 2 in Ibadan (Oyo State) and others in Calabar (Cross River State), Akure (Ondo State), Port Harcourt (Rivers State), Kano (Kano State) and Asaba (Delta State).
