Article Summary: The ECOWAS Headquarters, nicknamed the Eye of West Africa, was completed and inaugurated on 26th April 2026. The US$32 million project, funded by China, is located in Abuja and serves as the administrative centre for the 15-member bloc, featuring a conference centre, chambers for the parliament and court, and facilities for staff welfare.

A historic milestone for regional integration in West Africa, the new Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Headquarters, proudly nicknamed the Eye of West Africa, was completed and inaugurated on the 26th of April, 2026.

The ECOWAS Headquarters, also known as Eye of West Africa, is located on Airport Road, FCT and was commissioned on December 4, 2022, by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The project was delivered as a full grant by the People’s Republic of China through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (China Aid), with total funding of US$32 million.

The headquarters covers approximately 7 hectares. It consists of a central office block with a ground floor and nine upper floors, supported by east and west wings, each with seven floors. With construction completed, the facility is now in active use as the administrative centre of the 15-member ECOWAS bloc. The development also includes a conference centre and supporting facilities designed for official meetings and regional engagements.

The new ECOWAS headquarters complex includes:

  • A central office block for administrative and policy functions
  • Chambers for the ECOWAS Parliament and the Community Court of Justice
  • Separate buildings for maintenance, sports, and banking services
  • Conference and meeting facilities for regional and diplomatic engagements
  • Infrastructure to support staff welfare and intergovernmental operations
